Bushfire Water Spray System (BWSS)
CDDD was engaged to carry out final design verification to determine pump and tank duty and sizes, materials and suitable sprinkler heads types to AS 5414-2012 for a brick Fire Refuge building within the Sassafras district bushfire zone. As with many areas under a bushfire event, the towns mains water supply may become disrupted and be severely depleted as fire authorities draw multiple points within the system. In this case supplementary static storage water supplies were installed to maintain a reliable water source for the BWSS.
In this case a dual tank and pump-set was approved, computations for the sprinkler demand pipe sizes and pump duties were confirmed by the Hyena Program. The sprinkler system was designed to provide individual manual control to the following zones:
a. Water Shield
Extended coverage upright sprinklers were adapted to provide a deluge type effect across the main ridge of the building – this was the highest demand and created a large flow down the corrugated roof cascading onto the spoon drains at ground level.
b. Window Drenchers
Individual sprayers were selected to provide direct spray to shuttered windows and doors of varying sizes externally around the building.
c. Pre-Wet System
This is a flow misting type system directed to dampen the surround perimeter of the building's foliage, grass landscape and pathways directly adjacent the building. This system is to be implemented prior to the main fire front passing and should be intermittently run well in advance of the fire.  The pre-wet system is drawing from towns main only and would have a limited capacity once the fire fronts.  This design may have been one of the first in Victoria to comply with the high flow demand AS5414-2012 requires. The system was tested and commissioned to the satisfaction of the fire authority, client and the requirements of AS 5414-2012. Below is a video of the Bushfire Water Spray System.
